Red grapefruit and a mild, honeyed oak lends an outstanding balance of acid and fruit. Orange, tangerine, and pear. Hints of residual sugar. Zingy and refreshing, but also medium bodied and supportive. Almost sensuous, with light phenols and some PacNW pinot gris tendencies. Here are my notes on the 2004.
02 Wildekrans, Sauvignon Blanc
South African sauvignon blanc with an offshore factory taste. Light zesty nose. Short grapefruit and low acid. Weak palate. Vanishing.

93 Studert-Prum, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Gutsabfullung Riesling Kabinett
Heavy petrol and mineral. Full. Apricot, some tropical fruit, and light structured acid. Amber, shimmering starbright. Resilient -- open in the cooler for over a week with no degradation of fruit or acid. Powerful. Dry finish.
01 Qupe, Central Coast Syrah
Initially thin with red berries in front of light oak, Qupe opens in a matter of minutes to gorgeous Cotes du Rhone fruit. Earthy blackberries progress to plums and it's all backed by omnipresent yet subtle tar. Grapey. The tannins are soft and sweet up front, but grow to a stout leatheriness -- too tough and chewy without food, but not unpleasant.

88 Sugot-Feneuil, Special Club Blanc de Blancs
Light Cramant-style carbonation. Chardonnay qualities are crisp with green apples and grapefruit dominating the otherwise unfruity palate. This is a champagne consumed with yeast -- bready, aggressively phenolic, and sensuously creamy. The acidity is typical and shows how austere this wine once was. It is now hitting its stride with the mild nuttiness of great vintage blanc de blancs.

99 Luce della Vite, Toscana Luce
The most elegant of all the pre-2000 Mondavi-Frescobaldi wines. The American influence is clear here, as it is in all of the joint-project wines, but the 99 exhibits exquisite balance and an uplifting brightness of fruit. Medium tannins support wonderful blueberries, dark cherries, light earth, and a dynamic vanilla-laden oakiness. Supple.
94 Luce della Vite, Toscana Luce
This Super Tuscan flexes its muscles proudly. Complex, spicy, dark fruit nose. Deep earth -- raw soil -- from an assertive sangiovese presence, with elegant blackberries behind it. Hints of oak, but never overpowering. Long, developing finish.

02 J.K. Carrier, Provocateur Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Calm earthy nose with weak spices, fruit-dominated. Very light acid. Soft mouthfeel with a dominating presence of dark cherries -- no tart laser beam -- and cola. Cocoa finish with drying medium tannins. Juicy, but not extracted, and somewhat delicate. Detectable, balanced oak. Round.
